To help improve the aesthetic look of tile roofs, spec occasionally request rake tiles to be installed at rake edges. Tile manufacturers have released technical bulletins warning of the potential danger arising from this practice. Rake tiles are installed with one or two nails and a small amount of mortar only. More than half of the eight-pound tile is hanging over the roof’s edge providing a fall danger. We do not recommend the installation of these tiles. Although it is not cost prohibitive to proactively remove the tiles, as repairs are made to the roof’s edge, the tiles should not be reinstalled.
